I aspire to be a good ally.  An ally is someone who actively advocates and supports Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, promotes diversity and inclusion through their own actions, recognises their own power and privilege, and who will go out of their way to educate themselves, and to gain further insight and knowledge about the history and the impact of intergenerational trauma. Summer May Finlay, a Yorta Yorta woman, academic, writer, and a public health consultant states that “We need good allies. We are only three percent of the Australian population. We can’t raise the profile of issues affecting us without our allies”. Throughout my career I have strived to work along side Aboriginal colleagues and improve outcomes for Aboriginal infants, children, young people, and their families. More recently I have engaged in practice, teaching and research which have been Aboriginal-led where I have stood alongside Aboriginal colleagues to improve outcomes with children and young people, strengthen the workforce, and using my privilege to advocate for change.
